The Utah State University College of Engineering was established in 1888 as the Mechanical Arts Department. It was first housed in Old Main, the oldest building on campus, and was the first mechanical engineering program west of the Mississippi River. The department quickly expanded and by 1902 offered degrees in civil engineering, electrical engineering, mining engineering, and mechanical engineering. In 1909, it became the School of Engineering. In 1936, it became a college within the university and continued to grow over time. Today, the College of Engineering offers nine undergraduate degree programs (aerospace engineering; biological engineering; civil and environmental engineering; computer science and computer engineering; electrical and computer engineering; mechanical and materials engineering; systems analysis; technology management; and technology education) as well as eight graduate degree programs (aerospace studies; bioengineering/biomedical sciences; civil/environmental/water resources/geotechnical/hydraulic/structural/transportation); computer science & computer engineering; electrical & computer engineering; materials science & nanoengineering; mechanical & manufacturing systems design & robotics). It also offers certificate programs for those who wish to further their knowledge in a particular area without pursuing a full degree program. The college is home to research centers that focus on topics such as energy efficiency, water resources management, transportation safety systems, disaster preparedness among others.
