The University of Washington College of Engineering has had a long and distinguished history. Founded in 1861, the college was initially part of the Territorial University of Washington. It was one of the original departments, along with Arts and Sciences, Law, and Medicine. The college’s first faculty member was Professor J.D. Hollister, who also served as its first dean from 1885 to 1895. During this time, the college grew rapidly in size and stature as it welcomed students from across the country to pursue their studies in engineering.
From 1895 to 1916, Professor John Failing served as Dean and helped to expand the curriculum and research opportunities for students. Under his leadership, the college established a number of laboratories focusing on research in areas such as electricity, mechanics, civil engineering and hydraulics. In 1909, the College began offering its first graduate program in engineering with two tracks: Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. This marked an important milestone for the College as it expanded its offerings to include higher-level study opportunities for its students.
Throughout this period, enrollment continued to grow steadily while more programs were added including Chemical Engineering (1919), Industrial Engineering (1920), Metallurgical Engineering (1924) and Aeronautical Engineering (1927). During World War II (WWII), many faculty members left their posts at UW to serve in various capacities related to defense efforts abroad while some classes were suspended due to shortages of materials needed for instruction or lack of student interest in certain topics. After WWII ended, enrollment at UW’s College of Engineering surged once again due largely to returning veterans seeking educational opportunities that could help them transition back into civilian life after serving their country overseas during wartime.
