The University of South Carolina College of Engineering was founded in 1884 as the South Carolina College of Mechanics and Agriculture. The college’s first faculty member was Professor J. T. Moore, who taught the only two courses offered at the time – engineering mechanics and applied mathematics. In 1894, the college was renamed to South Carolina College of Engineering, Architecture, and Mechanics and was granted a charter by the state legislature, making it one of the oldest engineering schools in the United States.
