The University of Rhode Island College of Engineering has a long and rich history. Founded in 1888, it was the first engineering college in Rhode Island and one of the oldest in the nation. The original curriculum included courses in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and mining engineering. Over the years, the college has evolved to meet changing needs and technological advances. In 1922, a chemical engineering program was added to the existing offerings. By 1939, an industrial engineering program had been established as well.
In recent decades, the College of Engineering has continued to grow and expand its programs to meet changing needs. In 1984, a Graduate Program was established offering master’s degrees in several disciplines including civil engineering and electrical engineering. In 1997, a Ph.D. program was started offering doctoral degrees in several areas including materials science & engineering and manufacturing systems & technology. Today there are more than 40 undergraduate majors offered by the College of Engineering as well as 11 graduate degree programs that span multiple disciplines such as biomedical engineering, computer science & information technology, oceanography & coastal sciences, sustainable energy technologies and many more! In addition to its academic programs, the College also supports research initiatives ranging from renewable energy sources to nanotechnology to robotics and beyond!
