The University of Louisiana Lafayette College of Engineering was established in 1902 as the Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute (SLII). It was founded by the Louisiana State Legislature to provide higher education opportunities to the citizens of the state. The College of Engineering initially offered two-year technical courses in mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering. In 1920, four-year degree programs were added in these same disciplines. Over the years, additional degree programs were added in chemical engineering and industrial engineering, and in 1975 a Department of Computer Science was created. The College has continued to grow and add new programs over the years. Today, it offers undergraduate degrees in nine different disciplines including aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering and petroleum engineering. The college also offers graduate degrees including a Doctorate of Philosophy in Engineering Science, as well as several master’s degrees and certificates.
