The University of Central Florida College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) has a long and storied history that began in 1968. At its inception, CECS was comprised of three academic departments: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Industrial Engineering. In the following years, the college saw rapid expansion with the addition of the Computer Science Department in 1975 and the Materials Science Department in 1981. By 1988, CECS had become one of the largest engineering colleges in the United States with over 8,000 students enrolled.

Over the next two decades, CECS continued to grow both in size and scope. In 1989, a new state-of-the-art building was constructed on campus to accommodate an ever-expanding student body as well as new research laboratories for faculty members. This building became known as Engineering II and is now home to some of CECS’s most advanced research projects such as robotics engineering and computer science innovations. In 1998, an additional structure was built on campus called Engineering III which houses many of today’s classes for upper level undergraduate students and graduate students alike. The college also boasts a number of interdisciplinary research centers that focus on specific areas such as nanotechnology, energy systems engineering, biomedical sciences/engineering, space exploration technologies, etc., all aimed at providing its students with a comprehensive education that can help them tackle real-world problems.
