University of California San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering

The University of California San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering was founded in 1960. It is one of the oldest engineering schools in the UC system, and was the first public research university to offer a doctoral program in engineering. Initially, the school offered only two degrees: a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Applied Science and Engineering. Over time, the school has expanded its offerings to include programs for undergraduates, graduates, and professional engineers. In addition to traditional engineering disciplines such as computer science, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering, it also offers programs related to bioengineering, nanoengineering, biomedical engineering, energy sciences and materials science. The Jacobs School of Engineering has grown significantly over the years; by 2019 it had over 4500 students enrolled in its undergraduate and graduate programs. It is now one of the largest engineering schools in California with over 200 faculty members who conduct cutting-edge research in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and machine learning (ML). The Jacobs School of Engineering strives to provide an environment that fosters creativity and innovation for its students as well as its faculty members. It also works closely with industry partners to develop new products or services that can benefit society. Through its various initiatives such as the San Diego Center for Innovation (SDCI) and other collaborations with local businesses, government agencies and nonprofit organizations, it has been able to make an impact on society through technology-driven solutions that are beneficial both locally as well as globally.
