The University of Alabama Huntsville College of Engineering was founded in 1950 as a part of the university’s newly established School of Engineering. The School of Engineering was initially housed in the McAlister Building, which had been constructed in 1937 as a part of the original campus. In 1956, the college moved to its own building, known as the Engineering and Physical Sciences Building. This building still serves as the home for the College of Engineering. Over the years, numerous buildings have been constructed to house specific departments within the college including laboratories for research and teaching activities.

In 1967, UAH established its first doctoral degree program in engineering with a focus on space science engineering and research. Since then, the college has grown significantly to include more than 20 degree programs ranging from bachelor’s to doctoral degrees across eight different departments. The college is also home to several research centers such as the Center for Applied Optics and Center for Space Plasma and Aeronomic Research (CSPAR). These centers are responsible for conducting sponsored research projects that support many aspects of engineering research at UAH. Additionally, UAH has partnered with other universities such as NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and major industry partners such as Boeing and Lockheed Martin to further expand educational opportunities available to students within its College of Engineering.
