The School of Science and Engineering at Tulane University was founded in 1847 as the Medical College of Louisiana and was the first medical school in the Deep South. In 1884, the college was renamed Tulane University of Louisiana and began to expand its academic offerings to include science and engineering courses. In 1894, the university established its first engineering department, offering degrees in civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering. Over time, additional departments were added to cover a wide range of scientific fields, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology, biology, computer science, and environmental science. In addition to degree programs in these areas of study, Tulane also offers several interdisciplinary programs that combine elements from multiple disciplines. For example, their Environmental Sciences program incorporates aspects of biology, chemistry and geology to provide students with an understanding of how natural systems interact with one another. The school has also been a pioneer in introducing innovative learning approaches such as project-based learning and interdisciplinary research initiatives that allow students to explore new ideas as part of their academic experience. Today the School of Science and Engineering continues to be at the forefront of scientific exploration with more than fifty faculty members who are actively engaged in research projects across many disciplines.
