It was established in 1864 as part of the Oregon Territory and was named after President Ulysses S. Grant. The first settlers of Grant County arrived in the 1860s and 1870s, primarily from other parts of the United States. Today, it operates under an elected board system with five commissioners who are responsible for overseeing all aspects of county operations including law enforcement, public works and health services among others. Grant County has been shaped by its past with many historic buildings still standing today including old schoolhouses, churches and even some original homestead cabins from when settlers first arrived in this region over 150 years ago.
