It was first established as an independent county in 1840 and named after Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the only Roman Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence. The area was originally inhabited by Algonquian-speaking Native Americans who used it for hunting and fishing. In 1763, settlers from Massachusetts began to move into the area, bringing with them their own culture and customs. The first town to be established in what is now Carroll County was Conway in 1765. By 1776, several other towns had been established including Madison, Moultonborough, Sandwich, Tamworth and Tuftonboro. During the 19th century Carroll County experienced rapid population growth as more people moved into the area looking for work in its lumber mills and agriculture industry. As new industries such as tourism developed during this time period, so too did new towns such as Bartlett and Jackson which were both founded around 1865. Today, Carroll County is home to a population of over 47,000 people who are mostly employed in service-related industries such as retail trade and health care services. Despite its small size, it still maintains a strong sense of community with many events taking place throughout the year such as fairs, festivals and parades that celebrate its rich history and culture. The largest district is the SAU #9 Inter-Lakes School District, which serves the towns of Moultonborough, Sandwich, Tuftonboro and Wolfeboro. This district operates four elementary schools (Moultonborough Central School, Sandwich Central School, Tuftonboro Central School and Wolfeboro Elementary School), Middle/High Schools (Inter-Lakes Middle Tier and Inter-Lakes High School) and a career and technical center. The other districts in Carroll County include SAU #13 Conway Area Schools which serves Conway; SAU #45 Jackson Village Schools which serves Jackson; SAU #47 Madison Area Schools which serves Madison; and SAU #49 Tamworth Village Schools which serves Tamworth. These districts each operate one or two elementary schools as well as a middle/high school. All of the school districts in Carroll County strive to provide their students with a quality education that prepares them for success beyond their high school years. The curriculum is based on standards set by the state of New Hampshire as well as National Common Core Standards.
