According to itypemba, Butler County, Missouri is a county located in the southeastern corner of the state. It borders Stoddard County to the east, Dunklin County to the south, and Ripley County to the north and west. The county seat is Poplar Bluff, which is also the largest city in the county. Butler County was established in 1849 from a portion of Ripley County, and was named for William O. Butler, an officer in the War of 1812 who later served as Vice President under President Zachary Taylor. The area that would become Butler County had been inhabited by Native Americans since prehistoric times. In 1798, a group of settlers from Kentucky led by William Henry Ashley arrived in what is now Butler County and established a trading post near present-day Poplar Bluff. This settlement quickly grew into a thriving community and provided much needed supplies to travelers on the nearby riverboat routes. In 1819, Missouri was officially admitted as a state into the Union and soon after settlers began arriving from other states to take advantage of its fertile soil and abundant natural resources. The area that would eventually become Butler County saw an influx of settlers from Tennessee in particular who quickly began establishing farms throughout the region. By 1850, Butler County had grown substantially with over 4500 inhabitants spread across its various townships which included Ash Hill, Black River Township, Clearwater Township, Harviell Township and Neelyville Township among others. Agriculture was still one of the main industries but timber harvesting had become increasingly important as well due to its abundance of hardwood trees such as oak, hickory and walnut which were used for furniture making or shipped downriver to be used for construction purposes elsewhere along the Mississippi River Valley region. Today, Butler County remains largely rural but has seen an increase in population due mostly to retirees moving into area lakefront communities such as Clearwater Lake or Lake Wappapello which offer outdoor recreational activities such as fishing or boating while still being close enough to Poplar Bluff so residents can enjoy all it has to offer without having to commute too far away from home.
