According to itypemba, Sagadahoc County is located in mid-coast Maine and encompasses the towns of Arrowsic, Bath, Georgetown, Phippsburg, Richmond, Topsham and Woolwich. The county was first settled in 1607 by English explorer George Popham who established a short-lived settlement at the mouth of the Kennebec River. This settlement quickly failed due to a harsh winter and lack of supplies. In 1630, Massachusetts Bay Colony attempted to establish a permanent settlement in Sagadahoc County but this too failed due to the same issues that plagued Popham’s attempt. In 1643 however, Massachusetts Bay Colony succeeded in establishing a permanent settlement known as Cushnoc (later renamed Augusta) which served as the county seat until 1797 when it was moved to Bath. In 1760, Sagadahoc County became part of Cumberland County and remained so until 1854 when it became an independent county. During this time period, several towns were incorporated including Arrowsic (1768), Bath (1781), Georgetown (1802), Phippsburg (1814), Richmond (1823), Topsham (1829) and Woolwich (1845). Throughout its history, Sagadahoc County has been primarily agricultural with its main industry being shipbuilding. Today, Sagadahoc County is home to nearly 35,000 residents who enjoy its rural beauty and access to outdoor recreation opportunities such as fishing, hunting and hiking along with nearby beaches for swimming and boating. The county also boasts several historic sites such as Fort Popham State Historic Site which commemorates George Popham’s original settlement attempt as well as Reid State Park which features miles of pristine shoreline for visitors to enjoy. Sagadahoc County is home to three school districts which serve the county’s seven towns and nearly 35,000 residents. The first district, Regional School Unit 1 (RSU 1) serves the towns of Arrowsic, Bath, Georgetown, Phippsburg and Woolwich. RSU 1 encompasses five schools: Morse High School (grades 9-12), Bath Middle School (grades 6-8), Woolwich Central School (grades 4-5), Phippsburg Elementary School (grades K-3) and Arrowsic Elementary School (K-3). The second district, Regional School Unit 2 (RSU 2) serves the town of Richmond. RSU 2 encompasses two schools: Richmond High School (grades 9-12) and Richmond Middle/Elementary Schools (K-8). The third district, Regional School Unit 5 (RSU 5) serves the town of Topsham. RSU 5 encompasses two schools: Mt Ararat High School (grades 9-12) and Topsham Elementary/Middle Schools (K-8). All three school districts strive to offer a quality education for their students with an emphasis on teaching core academic subjects such as math, science and language arts as well as providing students with opportunities to explore other areas such as music, art and physical education. All three districts also value diversity and strive for excellence in all areas of instruction. Check lawschoolsinusa to learn more about Maine law schools.
