According to itypemba, Cheyenne County, Kansas is located in the western portion of the state and was officially established in 1873. The county was named after the Cheyenne Indians who had previously inhabited the area before it was settled by white settlers. The first settlers to arrive in Cheyenne County were mostly ranchers and farmers who were drawn to the area due to its abundance of natural resources, including timber, water, and grassland. These settlers began establishing small towns throughout the county, such as Bird City, St. Francis, and Des Moines. In 1885, Cheyenne County was officially incorporated into Kansas as a county. During this period of time, many new businesses began to open up in the area such as banks, stores, hotels and saloons. The railroad also came through during this time period which allowed for easier transportation of goods and people throughout the region. In 1901, a devastating tornado swept through Cheyenne County leaving behind much destruction in its wake. Despite this tragedy however, many of the towns that had been established prior to this event were able to rebuild themselves with much determination and perseverance from their citizens.
