According to itypemba, Butler County, Iowa is a rural county located in the heart of the state. It was established on January 15, 1851, when Iowa was admitted to the Union as the 29th state. The county was named for William O. Butler, an American soldier who fought in the War of 1812 and later served as a US Representative and Senator from Kentucky. The first settlers to Butler County arrived in 1848, two years before it officially became a county. The early settlers were mostly farmers and ranchers who came from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and other parts of the Midwest in search of new land to call their own. As more settlers came to Butler County over the next few years, small towns began to form throughout the area. Some of these towns included Shell Rock, Allison, Greene and Clarksville. As time passed, more businesses began to pop up throughout Butler County as well as churches and schools that served both local residents and visitors alike. In 1875, a railroad line between Waterloo and Cedar Falls was completed which helped to further expand commerce within the area. Today, Butler County still has a strong agricultural base though many small businesses have also opened up over time providing additional economic opportunities for local residents. This has allowed for population growth in recent years with an estimated population of 25 thousand people living within its borders today according to US Census data from 2020. In addition to its economic opportunities for residents today, there are also numerous recreational activities available within Butler County such as fishing on one of its many lakes or rivers; visiting one of its various parks; or exploring some of its historical sites like Fort Atkinson State Preserve which marks where soldiers once camped during the Black Hawk War in 1832-33 or Grimes Farm & Conservation Center which is home to several historical structures dating back over 100 years old.
