According to itypemba, Butte County, Idaho is a rural county in the southeastern region of the state. It was established in 1893 and named after the nearby Butte Creek. The county covers an area of 1,837 square miles and has a population of less than 8,000 residents. The county seat is Arco, which is also the largest town in Butte County. The first settlers to arrive in Butte County were Mormons from Utah who settled along Butte Creek in 1859. They built homes and established a few small farming communities. In 1892, gold was discovered in the area and many miners moved to Butte County hoping to strike it rich. However, most of them did not find any gold and they soon left the area. In 1905, construction began on the Idaho-Utah Railroad which connected Arco to other parts of Idaho and Utah. This railroad brought new economic opportunities to Butte County and spurred growth in towns like Arco, Dubois and Mackay. The railroad also helped spur mining operations throughout the county which continued until World War II when many mines were closed down due to labor shortages or falling demand for minerals. Throughout its history, Butte County has been known for its agricultural production as well as its outdoor recreation opportunities such as hunting, fishing and camping. Today, it remains a rural area with limited industry but continues to attract visitors from across Idaho who come for its outdoor activities as well as its small-town charm.
