The county was named after Logan Edwin Bleckley, a Confederate soldier who fought in the Civil War and later served as a Supreme Court Justice in the state of Georgia. The county is home to Cochran, the county seat of Bleckley County, as well as other cities such as Allentown, Cadwell, Chesterfield and Empire. The area now known as Bleckley County has had a long and varied history beginning with Native American tribes such as the Creek and Cherokee who inhabited the area for centuries before Europeans arrived. The first European settlers arrived in the late 1700s and early 1800s from North Carolina, Virginia and South Carolina. Later on in its history, Bleckley County saw an influx of African Americans from surrounding states during the Reconstruction Era following the Civil War. In 1871 Bleckley County became part of Pulaski County but two years later it was re-established as its own county with Cochran serving as its county seat. During this time period many new businesses were established including cotton mills which quickly became one of the main sources of income for many local families. As time went on more businesses moved into town including banks, restaurants and stores adding to Cochran’s growing economy. Today, Bleckley County is an agricultural community with a population of just over 13,000 people spread out among its various cities and townships. While agriculture remains one of its main industries it also has a thriving business sector with numerous companies providing employment opportunities for local residents. Education also plays an important role in Bleckley County with both public and private schools serving students from elementary through high school levels. Overall, Bleckley County is a vibrant community that continues to grow while honoring its unique history every step along the way. Bleckley County School District is located in Middle Georgia and serves the cities and townships of Cochran, Allentown, Cadwell, Chesterfield, and Empire. The district is comprised of four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The district also has two alternative education centers for students who need additional assistance in order to succeed academically. The elementary schools are Bleckley Primary School (K-2), Bleckley Elementary School (3-5), Allentown Elementary School (K-5), and Cadwell Elementary School (K-5). These schools provide students with a strong foundation in basic skills such as reading, writing, math, science and social studies while also offering enrichment classes like music, art and physical education. The middle school is Bleckley County Middle School which serves grades 6 through 8. This school offers more advanced classes such as algebra and geometry while providing a safe learning environment for students to grow academically as well as socially. The high school is Bleckley County High School which serves grades 9 through 12. This school offers a wide range of academic courses including Advanced Placement classes in addition to electives like music, art and drama. The high school also provides career guidance services to help students explore their options after graduation as well as college counseling for those who wish to attend college after graduating from BCHS. In addition to its academic offerings the district also provides extracurricular activities like sports teams for both boys and girls at all levels from elementary through high school. These teams provide an outlet for student athletes to compete while having fun while making lasting friendships along the way.
