According to itypemba, Columbia County, Florida is located in the northern part of the state and is bordered by Suwannee County to the west, Baker County to the north, Union County to the east, and Alachua and Bradford Counties to the south. It was established in 1832 from a portion of Duval County and is named for Christopher Columbus. Columbia County has a population of approximately 73,000 people as of 2019. The area that makes up Columbia County has been inhabited for thousands of years by various indigenous cultures including the Timucuan Indians. The first Europeans arrived in 1539 when Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto led an expedition through what is now Columbia County. The county was initially part of Duval County before becoming its own entity in 1832. In its early history, Columbia County was known primarily for its agricultural production which included cotton, peanuts, corn and tobacco. In addition to farming, timber was also a major industry in the county with several sawmills operating throughout the area. The county seat is Lake City which serves as an important center for business and commerce in North Florida. Columbia County, Florida is served by the Columbia County School District. The district consists of 19 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, and 3 high schools. Each school has its own set of core curriculum standards which are designed to ensure that students are learning at their highest potential. Columbia High School is particularly well known for its award-winning robotics team which has competed at multiple national competitions over the years.
