The county was formed as an original county in 1682, with its boundaries being defined by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Maryland to the north, and Virginia to the south. In 1787, Sussex County became part of newly formed state of Delaware after ratifying the United States Constitution making it one of only three states with all borders touching other states (the other two being Maryland and Pennsylvania). Since then, Sussex has seen tremendous growth due to its proximity to resorts such as Rehoboth Beach which has become a popular tourist destination for those looking for a beach getaway or outdoor recreation activities year-round.
