The Drexel University College of Engineering was founded in 1891 as the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry. The college was established by Anthony J. Drexel, one of the first industrialists in the United States and a philanthropist who wanted to provide educational opportunities to those who were less fortunate. Initially, the college offered courses in engineering, architecture, applied science and business. In 1914, it became the first engineering school to offer a four-year degree program in electrical engineering. During World War II, the college provided training for military personnel and continued its commitment to providing quality education for those interested in pursuing a career in engineering.
In 1973, the college was renamed The College of Engineering at Drexel University and changed its focus from offering degrees in specific engineering disciplines to offering interdisciplinary degrees that integrate technology with design solutions. As part of this shift in focus, new programs were developed such as biotechnology and computer engineering which are now staples at most universities around the world. In 2013, The College of Engineering received accreditation from ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology), an organization that certifies programs based on their quality assurance standards. Today, students can pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of disciplines including bioengineering; chemical; civil; computer; electrical; environmental; materials science; mechanical; software; systems and network engineering among others.
