Dartmouth College Thayer School of Engineering

Dartmouth College Thayer School of Engineering has a long and illustrious history. Founded in 1867, it was the first engineering school in the United States to offer a four-year undergraduate degree program. The school was founded by Professor Sylvester Marsh, who had studied engineering at the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in Paris. He wanted to bring this type of education back to America and so the Thayer School was born.

Throughout its history, the Thayer School has been at the forefront of technological advances and is known for its commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service. Over the years, it has produced some of the most influential engineers in America. These include two Nobel laureates – Herbert Hauptman (chemistry) and Edwin H. Land (physics). Other notable alumni include David Packard (HP), John Sculley (Apple), and Robert Noyce (Intel). Theschool has also been home to some of America’s most influential engineering professors, including Henry Petroski (structural engineering), Samuel C. Florman (mechanical engineering), and Richard Tresch Fienberg (electrical engineering).

In more recent years, Dartmouth College Thayer School of Engineering has continued to be a leader in innovation and technology development. In 2001, it launched its first online degree program for non-traditional students pursuing an advanced degree in engineering management or software development. Since then, it has expanded its online offerings to include programs such as biomedical engineering and computer science. In addition to these programs, Thayer also offers a wide range of courses that can be taken either on campus or online from anywhere in the world.
